Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology was one of the three programmes under College of Health Sciences approved by the National Universities Commission. The initial three pioneering students in the Department were transferred from the Faculty of Science and Science Education after a screening exercise in 2009. Subsequently, the population of students in the Department increased through students’ admission. The Department have so far graduated three (3) sets of students.
2. PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES
To use all means at our disposal to help students learn the fundamental mechanisms of human physiology needed for the practice of modern medicine and to stimulate lifelong learning in Physiology and Pathophysiology.
The B.Sc. Physiology pogramme is designed to:
(i) Provide students with a comprehensive knowledge-base and practical. Skills in Physiology, preparatory to the Clinical programme in Medicine, and allied fields;
(ii) Develop in students practical and technical skills for advanced study:
(iii) Develop in students ability to apply theoretical knowledge to normal functions and dysfunctions of the body;
(iv) Develop in students, ability for intellectual inquiry through acquisition of relevant skills in critical thinking, creativity and independent and collaborative working skills;
(v) Develop generic skills, applicable foe engagement and performance in other fields of endeavour – including entrepreneurship.
3. ADMISSION POLICY
3.1.1 University Technical Matriculation Examination (UTME)
(i) Candidates must process credits at the SSCE, GCE, and NECO or approval equivalent in at least 5 subjects namely: English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.
(ii) The 5 credits should be at not more than 2 sittings and must have been obtained within the last 5 years.
(iii) All candidates must apply through JAMB with UTME subjects as English, biology, Chemistry and Physics.
(iv) In addition to (iii) above, all applicants are required to successfully go through the Bowen University Screening Exercise before a final admission.
3.1.2 Through Direct Entry
For candidates holding GCE Advanced Level or acceptable level of IJMB in Physics. Chemistry and Biology (or Zoology). In addition, candidates must satisfy the conditions in a (i) and (ii) above.
Duration of the Programme
The programme is scheduled to take a period of four academic years for UTME or three academic years for Direct Entry candidate.
4. ACHIEVEMENT SINCE INCEPTION
The Department graduated her first set of twelve (12) Students in 2012. Since then, numbers of grandaunts have increased progressively to 23 students in 2013, and 27 students in 2014.
The Department produced a first Class Student in the person of Otabor Emmanuel O. in 2014.
Many of the final year students research work have been published in reputable International Journals including a work conducted by Akinbola Abiola Olayemi on the “Distribution of ABO and rhesus blood groups among Medical Students in Bowen University’, published in Annals of biological research.
Also, “Pattern of Weight gain and glycaemic response to graded dosages of Allium Sativum (Garlic) in non-diabetic female rats’, published in the International Journals of Medical advances. These are just two of so many of such publications
