This Department, which was established from the University’s inception on 4th November 2002, offers for now, one degree programme in Physics and Solar Energy. The foundation staff comprised one Professor, T. O. Aro, and two Assistant Lecturers, O. O. Ajani and J. A. Akinpelu. Presently, the number of staff in the department has risen to sixteen, made up of eleven academic, six academic support and one secretarial staff. At its inception, in 2002/2003 session, the students’ enrolment was 16, and the total students’ enrolment in the 2013/2014 session is 70 made up of 68 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate students. The Department graduated its first set of students on 4th November 2006 when the University held its Maiden Convocation. The Department rejoiced greatly on that occasion because the best graduating student in the entire University, Mr. Adewale Moroof AMOSU (in First Class, with CGPA of 4.85), was from this Department!! Consequently he won the Chancellor’s prize, among many others. The Association of Physics and Solar Energy Students’ constitution was approved and subsequently duly registered by the University in the second semester of 2006/2007 session.
Physics being the study of matter and energy, involving postulates, theories and experimentation, the ‘hands on’ approach is adopted in the curriculum. In the lectures, emphasis is placed on identifying and understanding the principles of Physics, while the laboratory course, demonstrations and tutorials are aimed at reinforcing the understanding of existing theories, discovering new principles and paving the way to the technological and other applications of Physics.

Achievement since inception
(a)At the NUC’s Science Research and Development Fare at Abuja on 24 – 25 November, 2004, the entry by our students was rated first among the Private Universities in the Country. That performance was an emergence of excellence, which this Department should strive to maintain.
(b)Energy Globe Winner for 2007
Another ‘flash of excellence’ came our way again in 2007, when the Department emerged as a “National Energy Globe Winner for 2007” for the country Nigeria. The award was for “A Solar Tracker Model for Traffic Light Systems”, constructed by Adeleye Emmanuel ASALEYE and Damilola FADUGBA-ALFRED for their final year project in July 2006. The two students travelled to Belgium to receive the award personally from the ENERGY GLOBE Award Organization in the European Parliament Building, Brussel, on 11th April, 2007.
Upcoming News and Events
The department is proposing to offer the B.Sc. Physics with Electronics programme soon.
